Peru: Frozen sweet corn exports on the rise

The Exporters Association (Adex) informed that exports of Peruvian corn and its derivatives increased by 27% between January and June this year, amounting to 11.2 million dollars. This is higher than the amount reached in the same period of 2011, which was of 8.8 million dollars.

He added that the increase in exports was due to higher sales of "frozen sweet corn", HS code which has gone from 1.9 million dollars in the first six months of 2011 to four million dollars during the same period this year; a 109% increase.

Peruvian corn was exported under 15 HS codes, from which eight experienced negative growth.

The one showing the greatest positive growth was "Hard yellow corn", which went from 6 to 46 thousand (+639%), while "Bran, sharps and other residues from the sifting, milling and other types of maize processing" was the one with the biggest negative growth (-26%), with a revenue of 109,000 dollars.

According to Adex, the products mentioned are part of the Peruvian agro exportable offer which will be presented at Expoalimentaria and at PerĂº Natura.

In the ranking of destinations, more than 30 of them were identified between January and June this year.

The United States was the main market for Peruvian corn with purchases valued at 4.4 million dollars, which represents 39% of all sales.

In second place was Spain, followed by Ecuador. Other markets to which smaller shipments are made include France, Chile, Japan, Italy, China, the Netherlands and Germany, among others.
