Brazilian peach harvest about to start

September marks the arrival of the spring, but also the beginning of the harvest of a fruit which is widely used in Brazilian cuisine and in the production of sweets and juice. The harvesting period usually continues until February or March next year. In 2011, for example, 925,777 kilos were sold at the central supply point of Espirito Santo (Ceasa/ES), located in Cariacica, Brazil, which generated a revenue of R$ 3,274,503.90.

According to statistics from Ceasa/ES, the fruit has a good market at Espirito Santo, but the price usually undergoes small oscillations. At the beginning of the harvest, prices for the product are higher. An example is what happened in September 2011, when 3,240 kilos were sold and the average price was of R$ 5.36. In February this year 115,688 kilos were sold and the average price went down to just R$ 3.46.

According to the Technical and Regional Units Manager, Marcos Antônio Cosseti Magnago, from April to July there is no register for the supply of this fruit at Ceasa/ES, because it is not there outside of the harvesting period. "The national peach harvest begins in September, and some years there are small amounts already in August; however, it is from November to January when production peaks. It is a seasonal product," explained Magnano.
