Expected increase in Peruvian mango production

The Peruvian Association of Mango Exporters (APEM) estimates that the production of export mangoes will reach 100,000 tonnes in the season between November 2012 and March 2013, which represents a 40% increase compared to the previous period, informed Andina.

APEM's president, Juan Rivera, said that the production will be higher than in the period between November 2011 and March 2012, when it reached 70,000 tonnes.

"The flowering practically just finished and we already see small little fruits. We are expecting to reach 100,000 tonnes due to a better productivity," he said.

He pointed out that the larger part of the production (80% of export mangoes) comes from the region of Piura, followed by Lambayeque and others in smaller percentages.

The greatest volumes of mangoes are shipped to Europe and the United States, and the rest to markets such as Japan, China and New Zealand, among others.

Finally, he mentioned that the number of hectares dedicated to mango crops is sufficient to cover foreign demand, although more will be required if Asia's purchases grow in the next few years.
