Fairtrade turnover in Germany grown by 35 percent
The association Transfair, who provides the independent fairtrade hallmark, can be satisfied in its 20th year with strongly growing turnovers. The engagement of the trade and industry, as well as the consumers buying consciously, meant that there was an increase in turnover of 35% in the first half of 2012 compared to the first half of 2011. The German consumers bought fairtrade products worth around 250 million Euro.
The increasing versatility of the assortment, mainly thanks to more own brands with the fairtrade hallmark and the large amount of sales points in Germany (36,000) contribute to the success. "The economic success is the consumers anniversary gift to the producers organisations in Africa, Asia and Latin America," said Transfair manager Dieter Overath.
The most important growth areas are coffee, flowers and bananas, says Transfair. The sales of fairtrade roses has increased the most at 130 million roses - an increase of 221 percent. The sales of fairtrade bananas increased by around 53 percent to 8,200 tonnes and the sales of coffee was 4,700 tonnes in the last half year, an increase of nine percent.
