Netherlands: Grodan Sustainable Development Programme explained
Global challenges such as an increasing need for food and threat of resource scarcity, demand a more efficient and effective approach in growing. In addition, growers have to operate on a knife-edge in an ever changing market. For this reason, Grodan continuously develops and improves its products and expertise in the area of Precision Growing. Precision Growing is the most efficient and effective form of growing focussed on using minimum input materials to generate maximum output.
Operational costs decrease, crop yield and quality
increase. In addition, this form of growing actively contributes to sustainable horticulture. The new ‘Sustainable Growing’ brochure explains how Grodan plays a role in the sustainable cultivation of tasty, healthy and safe vegetables. As part of its corporate strategy, Grodan has implemented a programme that guarantees continuous improvement in the field of sustainability. Several teams have been specially formed within the organisation, each focusing on the further development of the company’s corporate sustainability directions.
Loek Hermans, leader of the Dutch Upper House and chairman of Greenport Holland, received the first copy of the ‘Sustainable Growing’ brochure: “Innovation and collaboration in the value chain is absolutely essential to achieve sustainable horticulture. I think the Dutch horticultural sector is a leading example of how this aim can be realised. I am very pleased to see more and more companies in the sector, like Grodan, showing a good example of how to turn this ambition into reality,” he said.
“Sustainability is an integral part of the Grodan Group strategy, so we have created the brochure to explain how we implement sustainable development in each phase of our product life cycle. As there is always room for improvement, we have implemented a sustainable development programme. From next year we will use the
results from the programme as further input for our annual sustainability reporting, according to the Global Reporting Initiative1 guidelines. In this way we aim to create transparency in how we actively contribute towards sustainable horticulture now and in the future.” explains Vincent Deenen, Director Marketing at Grodan.
