The great drought of the summer months led to a further decline in the offer of pears for the 2012/13. This is confirmed by the CSO- Fruit and Vegetables Service Center that, in the monitoring of production carried out within the newly founded Pear Interprofessional Body Promoting Committee, recorded a decrease in the supply of Williams which would bring the production to lower levels than the already low yields estimated before harvest.
The quantities forecast in early July already placed the production of this important variety at low levels for the last decade due to a lower number of fruits; the further decline in production was due to the severe drought that has affected production areas hindering strongly the normal development of the fruit. The sizes are therefore smaller. The update of the estimates produced showed a decrease of around 6-7% compared to early predictions that lead to a decline in the offer of over 30% compared to 2011.
The situation monitored today with the Williams and Conference varieties, could also be confirmed with Abate.
