Spanish workers to harvest pears in Belgium.

24 seasonal workers from Trebujena, Spain arrived in Sint-Truiden, Belgium last Saturday for a three-month stint of harvesting pears. This according to Spanish newspaper El diario de Jerez.

According to the paper this is the first time Trebujena is involved in a project, in which unemployed workers can find employment abroad.

Jorge Rodríguez, mayor of Trebujena, works together with Manuel Cárdenas, recently appointed to a position in the Department of Labour, Tourism and Trade in Andalucía. Cárdenas visited the Europe over a year ago, trying to find employment for Spanish workers in the pear industry.

In a few days delegates will visit Sint-Truiden again, this time to provide workers with clothing and other accessories. Both the mayor and delegate Manuel Cárdenas will check that working conditions are sufficient and that housing and other basic needs are taken care of. They will also meet with other companies interested in hiring Spanish workers.
