Growing resistant potatoes

Multiple German research institutes and cultivation companies want to fight the potato disease Phytophthora together with organic advisers and growers. Together they have started a project with the goal to develop new potato varieties that are resistant to the disease pathogen Phytophthora infestans.

For the proposed development of disease resistant growing materials, the potato clones of the German Julius Kühn Institute (JKI) are of special significance. The clones from the JKI-Prebreeding-Programm recently distinguished themselves by a high quantity resistance against Phytophthora, according to JKI researcher Dr. Thilo Hammann.

In the project special importance is placed upon a sustainable resistance, which isn't immediately broken by damage agents. The new varieties should also receive defence mechanisms against other potato diseases and pests.
