Stefaan Dobbels, exporter Gerdo:
"Leek prices much higher than last year"
The leek market is quiet at the moment. "Demand is calm, but the prices however are good," says Stefaan Dobbels of Gerdo. "Prices have been a little lower, at around 35 cents. Last week they rose to to 52 cents (29 August)." According to him, the quiet demand is mainly due to the holiday period and the higher prices due to the fact that there is less supply.
"The comparison with last year is interesting. Then there was 35 to 40 cents less paid. It is true that there were larger volumes available." A major recipient of Gerdo is France. "Less goes there now. Last week was quiet. But we expect that this week will be better. Then the holidays are over and I expect the real export volumes to be sent in the next couple of weeks."
Stefaan Dobbels from Gerdo has some 25 years experience in the fruit and vegetable trade and is specialized in the export of vegetables for the fresh market. The main products are leeks, tomatoes, carrots and lettuce. These are mainly exported to countries like France, Italy and Poland.
