Area of top fruit is decreasing in Bavaria

According to information from the Bavarian Bureau of Statistics the total area used in the German state Bavaria for growing top fruit in 2012 is 2,435 hectares. This area is owned by 1,029 companies that all grow top fruit on an area of 0.5 hectares minimum. Compared to the results of the research of the top fruit cultivation in 2007 the area has decreased by 9.4 percent.

Almost half of the area (1,124 hectares) is used for growing apples. Compared to 2007 the apple area decreased by 4.2 percent. In 2012 the varieties Elstar (166 hectares) and Jonagold (117 hectares) are still the most commonly grown. 20 percent of the Bavarian area is used for growing cherries and 18 percent is used for growing plums.
