wettest Summer in 100 years

UK: Challenging onion season

The UK onion season is proving challenging this year. After first a very dry Spring, which then turned into a very wet Spring, followed by the wettest, dullest Summer in 100 years the growing condition have been far from ideal.

One onion trader said, "Although the situation varies across the country, in general it will be a poor, light crop. The situation is very different from last year when we had a big over supply. We have gone from surplus to deficit."

Prices at the moment vary, for the smaller sizes the price is low and bigger onions are just on average.

As to whether the onions will be good for storage is the million dollar question according to the trader. The weather of course will determine how the season plays out.
