Romania looks to kiwi production

Bucharest - In Romania it should be possible to grow 'exotic fruit' in the future, according to an assessment by the ministry of Agriculture.

Paula Craioveanu, adviser to the ministry, announced an appropriate 'program for expansion'. The program will be realised as soon as researchers have established which areas in the country offer the most favourable cultivation conditions.

According to Craioveanu Bucharest expect the plan to be financially supported by the European Union. According to the Romanian ministry of Agriculture for instance kiwi's could be grown in their own country and the yield per hectare could well be 25 tons. The kiwi production in own country could bring a considerable saving of import expenses.
