TROPS Spanish mangoes double sales projection for 2012 season

Just 10 years ago a Spanish mango was an unusual sight in a European wholesaler and even more of a rarity on the supermarket shelves. Nowadays things have changed and they can be found gracing the shelves of many a supermarket.

Trops is a Spanish organisation that specialises in the production and commercialisation of both mangoes and avocados - both organic and conventional production.

Trops are exporting over 7,000 tonnes of mostly Osteen, Kent and Keitt variety mangoes this season, which will run from August to November. This figure represents a considerable achievement as it is more than double last season's figures.

The higher projection is a result of higher yields stemming from an increased production area and favourable weather conditions during the flowering period.

This year Trops is also opening new storage facilities that mean they will be able to supply higher volumes of fully ripened "ready to eat" mangoes. The company is already able to supply a good quantity of tree ripened mangoes, thanks to their proximity to their markets and agrotechnical improvements. Trops' main markets are based in Europe at the time of writing, but there are hopes to develop more markets in the future.

A further factor that will help to sell the increased mango yield is the appearance of this season's crop. Due to extreme low rainfall the fruit has taken on especially good colour.
