Marginal growth in UK mushroom market

The UK mushroom market is a mature market which is growing marginally year on year. This is a good result according to John Smith from Greyfriars, "Many other sectors in the fresh produce industry are declining, I put this down to home owners wasting less fruit and vegetables. The mushroom differs from other vegetables in that it is used as an ingredient and bought for a specific purpose or dish."

The mushroom industry is also putting around £1-1.5 million per year into promoting the product.

No real growth has been seen in the exotic mushrooms such as Oyster and Shiitake, while there has only been marginal growth in varieties like Chestnut and Portabella of 3-4%.
