Spain: Good melon harvest in Villacañas

Melon season has started in Villacañas and Toledo, Spain. The first harvest is well known by wholesalers, and this year the demand for Spanish melons is higher than ever. The price of the crop has gone up sizably.

It’s all hands on deck for the growers in Villacañans, as the day starts at seven in the morning and a lot needs to be done. Local grower Felix, his father, his children and his friends, plan to bring in the first harvest – a harvest almost entirely devoted to melons.

José Angel, coordinator, trades with intermediaries and pays between 30 to 35 cents per kilo. The melons are then transported to Madrid. Eventually, the Villacañas melons end up in restaurants and on dinner tables all over Spain.
