After a year in which Frunet obtained a position as a year round supplier of organic mangoes from various countries of origin, this week is again the time of the annual own harvest of organic mangoes from Spain. Frunet have an own cultivation area from family holdings in the Malaga region, where more than 12 HA of organic mangoes are being cultivated this year. Harvesting takes place once a year from September to the middle of November. In Andalusia, southern Spain in the mangoes are being ripened.
According to Richard Soepenberg it is striking that the yield this year is exceptionally large. "It takes a few years before mangoes really reach full ripeness and there are lots of new trees this year. Two years ago we harvested 140,000 kg, last year 200,000 and it is expected that we will harvest 400,000 kg this season," the trader explains. "Last year the mangoes were very coarse, but this year we expect more fine mangoes. One could say that the Spanish mango production is advancing. Also the conventional volumes will be a lot larger than last year."
Frunet grow two mango varieties, without fibre, namely Osteen and to a lesser extent Keitt. "This variety has a soft, sweet aromatic taste and with this we are different from the mangoes of other growing areas," Richard says. Normally we start the season with a price of about Euro 10 per box. This year because of the high volume that price will be a little lower, but not as low compared to the mango prices from other countries."
Frunet pack the mangoes in white-green Bio-boxes, but can also supply the mangoes in flowpack. There are 6 to 10 fruits per 4 kg box. Clients of Frunet Bio are all over Europe, from supermarkets to wholesale markets. Germany is the largest customer.
