Northern Italy: Kiwi Bacterial Canker outbreaks in Trentino

Two outbreaks of PSA,the agent causing Actinidiae Bacterial Canker, have been found during June and July 2012 in the Trento Province (region of Trentino-Italy). This bacterium, which is very aggressive, attacks only kiwi plants. The two hotspots have been promptly eradicated.

For the last three years the disease has been causing damage (sometimes compromising entire producing areas) mostly in Central and Northern Italy. The disease has been found in Trentino in young, yellow kiwi plants coming from outside the region. The outbreaks are currently confined to Valsugana, a peripheral area far from Alto Adige, Vallagarina, Valle dei Laghi and Alto Garda, which is where the production is more intense.

Further monitoring of plants and nurseries are taking place. The Phytopathology authority, research facility Fondazione Mach and growers associations (as well as many single producers) are all taking measures to contain the disease, for which prevention is the only cure.
