Continuing growth of utilised agricultural area expected in Peru

The total area of the 22 selected agricultural products in Peru will most likely be larger in 2012/13 than last season. The Ministry of Agriculture (MINAG) took inventory in May and the amount came to an acreage of 2.18 mln hectare, reports the German Agricultural Market Information Company (AMI) on its website.

Only six of the 22 selected species are expected to have a smaller acreage than last season. All of the other products are expected to achieve a larger acreage. The 22 selected products come to around 42 percent of the gross added value of agriculture.

The products expected to decrease are rice (-0.7 percent), potatoes (-0.2 percent), cotton (-13.3 percent), onions (-4.3 percent), sweet potatoes (-11.2 percent) and garlic (-32.8 percent).
