"Spain: "Ramellet" tomatoes registered as conservation variety"
"Ramellet" tomatoes, grown traditionally in Mallorca, have been included as a conservation variety in the National Register of Commercial Varieties to prevent the appropriation of their name by other hybrid vegetables.
The Local Varieties Association informed that the entry in the register is now official and has already been published in Spain's Official State Gazette (BOE) after two years of negotiations, and this will help protecting the traditional "ramellet" tomato variety.
The entity sees this as a reason for celebration after two firms had tried in previous years to obtain the Protected Geographical Indication quality label for a type of hybrid cherry tomato which was not the traditional one from Mallorca.
"Ramellet" tomatoes are a traditional variety mainly characterised by staying fresh for up to nine months after being harvested, explained the association.
