More certainty with Pherodis pheromones
Caterpillars can cause a great deal of damage to crops. Small caterpillars scrape away the under-surface of the leaf, whilst larger caterpillars eat holes in the leaves. In addition, their excreta foul the crop. Butterflies and moths can be controlled most effectively when interventions are made in good time. They are not active during the day, making scouting more difficult. Nevertheless, timely identification is of great importance.
Female butterflies or moths that are ready to mate release aromatic substances to attract males over long distances. Each butterfly and moth species releases a specific pheromone that attracts solely males of the same species. Many pheromones can be synthesised, and using these synthetic pheromones in a trap offers you a ready means of determining which butterfly and moth species are present in your crop. Koppert supplies a wide range of Pherodis pheromones, all of the same excellent quality. The pheromone is packaged in a rubber or plastic dispenser that slowly releases the pheromone. The scent attracts adult males, which are captured by adhesive plates and can then be identified and counted.
Pheromones need to be used in combination with pheromone traps. Use 2 to 4 traps per hectare for each species of butterfly or moth that may be present in the glasshouse. Use 1 trap per 500 to 1.000 m2 for mealy bugs. Funnel traps and water traps are primarily intended to capture butterflies and moths.
