The banana is one of the most important agricultural products for the Colombian economy. Its markets to both the domestic and international markets. Because of its quality and availability, the Colombian banana has achieved much recognition as demand in markets around the world.
According to data from AUGURA, in Colombia 95 million boxes of bananas are generated per year which represents USD 700 million per year.
The major banana growing regions of Colombia are Magdalena and Urabá, where fruit for export is produced. According to Lorenzo Bello, Trading Manager of Lorenzo Bello Diaz & Cia Ltda, the banana marketer of Colombian Cavendish, for the moment the weather has been favorable in plantations. There has been rain which favors the banana agribusiness.
Today, the main concern among banana exporters and generally Colombian exporters is the re-valuation of the Colombian peso that has been affecting exporters by the representative rate. Currently, USD 1 is below COP 1,800. This week, President Juan Manuel Santos has asked the Central Bank to buy U.S. dollars to offset the effect of the dollar revaluation.
