Reasonable apple harvest in the Alte Land

The fruit growers in the Alte Land, the well known German fruit growing area along the Elbe, can be cautiously positive toward the coming harvest season, reports the German website fruchtportal.de. According to the first estimates there are around 285,000 tonnes of apples on the trees in the Alte Land. According to the Landbouwschap Niedersachsen this is around 5000 tonnes more than last year. Frost in the winter and during the blooming period in May meant that the harvest wasn't even better. Market observers assume that the growers from the Alte Land will be satisfied with the probable harvest amounts. Seeing as a below average apple harvest is predicted for West-Europe, growers hope for higher prices than in season 2011/2012.

For the whole of Germany growers predict an apple harvest of 933,000 tonnes. This is around 20,000 tonnes less than last year. In the whole of Europe a harvest of 9.7 million tonnes is estimated. Last year the harvest here was 10.6 million tonnes.
