Canada: Cherry harvest only half way through
2012 Staccato harvest is now underway at home farm and Jealous Fruits say they are very excited with the look of the packs, and quality of the fruit. The Staccatos, they say, have an excellent crunchy texture, and thick, green stems with excellent retention. Sizing is peaking on 9 row, with plentiful 9.5 and 10 row as well. Unfortunately both 8.5 row 10.5 row availability looks quite limited at home farm. Expect availability of 10.5 to increase when the Cholla Hills Staccatos are harvested, August 24th through September 3rd.
Staccato is one of the premier releases from the Canadian cherry breeding program at Summerland, BC. The variety combines a late harvest date with good fruit size, a firm crunchy texture, excellent rain cracking resistance, and good cropping levels due to it's self fertility gene. Staccato has the great combination of being a grower friendly cherry, with all the attributes desired by the marketplace. Like most of the Summerland varieties, Staccato is expressly bred to thrive in the moderate temperatures of Canada's Okanagan Valley, where it reaches it's full potential.
Staccato is available from most Canadian cherry shippers, and only a select number of other shippers worldwide. At Jealous Fruits, they have a full 2 ½ week Staccato season.
They expect the Staccato harvest to run from August 15th through to August 23rd at their home farm location, and from August 24th through to September 1st from their high elevation farm, which is located further north, and a full 1000 feet higher in elevation.
The Sovereign and Sentennial harvest will be concurrent with and on the heels of Staccato, running from August 25th through to September 4th . The weather forecast continues fine at this point: Sunny skies, with daily highs in the range of 28 to 32C, and nighttime temperatures of 10 to 14 C.
