Columbian pineapple production is relevant

According to annual reports in the years 2006-2010, pineapple production in 23 regions performed on a national level.

2010 saw a harvest of 11,303 ha, providing 568,377 tons and a yield of 50,285 kilograms per ha. Santander did extraordinarily well with 51.6% of GDP, followed by Valle del Cauca with 14.2% and Caquetá with 12.9%.

According to data from Asohofrucol, based on Quintero Hermanos, the export of pineapple has gone down compared to last year: 1,796,662 kilograms with a value of US$ 1,387 million. In the first five months of this year 1,169 MT was distributed, representing a value of US$ 794,585.

The mass production of pineapple began in Santander

According to Gilberto Herrera, secretary van Asohofrucol, cultivation of the common pineapple started in Santander with 7500 ha 10 years ago. Now, only a thousand ha is dedicated to this crop, due to a lack of technical support to tackle infestation and disease. Also, demand for the common pineapple dwindled: the Golden Pineapple came into demand because of its shape and taste. Regions like Rionegro and Girón started cultivating this fruit and are now its chief producers. In Sabana de Torres and San Alberto, the market is growing as well.
