Germany: Migros tests 'Express' stores
The Swiss supermarket chain Migros is currently testing new stores which are situated nearby stations and are open on Sunday, reports the Swiss newspaper the SonntagsZeitung. They are calling the stores 'Migros-Express'. The assortment is focussed on commuters. After the first chains in Rapperwil and Luzern, a third express store will open next week near the station Zürich-Altstetten. The concept will be reviewed after the opening of the third store.
Customers will find a large assortment, a large take-away section and products for daily use in the newest branch. They will also be able to scan their own products. Eva Pfeiffer, spokesperson for Migros Zürich explains: "We are gathering experience and feedback with this location." In which form and whether or not more Migros-Express stores will be opened, has not yet been decided. A lot depends on if the Migros-Express stores are even allowed to be open on Sunday. Sunday opening hours, according to the Unia trade union, are still a touchy subject. They have taken legal action against the opening hours for the Migros-Express in Rapperwil.
