Germany: Cultivation of early potatoes is clearly decreasing

In almost all regions of Germany the harvest of early potatoes has already finished. Martin Umhau, chairman of the 'Deutsche Bauernverband' (DBV) reported last week that the agrarians are now preparing for harvesting the varieties that are meant for consumption in the winter and spring. The harvest had to be put off for the last few days due to the rainfall. The favourable weather predictions of the coming days could mean that the harvest could be continued quickly. Up until now the harvest predictions have been average, whilst 2011 was a very productive year.

The development of the potato growing areas however, is a cause of concern. The potato area in Germany has been continually decreasing for years. Whereas the potato area in 200 was still 304,000 hectares, it was only 258,700 hectares in 2011. This year the area has decreased again. Low, often non cost covering grower's prices are the main cause of this development.
