Fruit harvest in Spain smaller in 2012
The Spanish ministry of Agriculture estimate the Spanish strawberry harvest at 289,800 tons this year, according to the German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI) on its website. That would be 11% percent more than last year. In accordance with this they estimate the Spanish strawberry export increased by 16% as well to 243,400 tons till the end of May.
The remainder of the 2012 fruit harvest is expected to be smaller than in 2011 with the exception of the apricot harvest. The official estimates by the ministry are often not in accordance with the figures mentioned during international meetings, such as Europech and Prognosfruit. With official estimates one often also adds estimates of less important production areas. As in general no actual information from these areas is available the estimates by the ministry are normally more conservative and show smaller discrepancies.
The top fruit harvest has only decreased by 8% (apples) and 12% (pears) according to official figures. For peaches and nectarines the ministry reckons with a decrease in the harvest of 7% (nectarines). The cherry harvest would have decreased by 7 percent and that of plums by 3 percent.
