The Multiparty Trade Agreement between EU, Colombia and Peru, signed on June 26, will enter into force later this year or early 2013, after it is ratified by the Parliament and approved also by the governments of these countries in South America.
Following the signing of the agreement by the European Commission and the governments of Peru and Colombia on 26 June, the Parliament must ratify it, which is scheduled for the months of September and October. Thus the entry into force
will not be before the end of 2012.
The Multiparty Trade Agreement with Colombia and Peru completed negotiations in May 2010 and since then has been under a long process of handling until it was signed on June 26, 2012.
According to FAO data for 2009, fruit and vegetable exports from Colombia to the world amounted to 2.1 million tons. As for Peru, fruit and vegetable exports stood at 503,998 tons, of which 315,394 tons corresponded to fruit and 188,604 tons to vegetables. The main fruits exported by Peru to the world were the banana with 83,293 tons and 69,191 tons of mango. Among the vegetables, the main exported was
asparagus with 122,131 tons.
For FEPEX, with the entry into force of this new agreement, it reinforces the policy of globalization that makes the EU market the most open to the world of fruit and vegetable import, forcing the Community producers to meet the challenge of an increasingly intense competition.
