The tomato: Austria's favourite vegetable

The tomato, also called 'Paradeiser' in Austria, is the Austrians' favourite vegetable, according to the AMA (Agrarmarkt Austria). Every other Austrian named the tomato as his or her favourite type of vegetable. Last year Austrians ate 31,403 tonnes of fresh tomatoes worth almost 80 million Euro. The prices were traditionally higher in the winter compared to the summer: a kilo of tomatoes cost 3 Euro on average between January and April.

Out of all the tomatoes eaten in Austria, the share of organic tomatoes was relatively low. Only 4.4 percent of the tomatoes that Austrians bought last year, where grown organically.
