Eryvan Pires of Fruitmarket says that at the moment there are various origins on the market. "The mangoes come from Mexico, Senegal, Brazil, Puerto Rico and Israel. The quality is good in general, but the market is really very quiet. Retailers sell the product at between 1.29 and 2.49 each and the importers pay between 2.50 and 5.00 per box with 8 to 10 mangoes. The demand really is very low for the time of the year. August in itself is always a not so good month because of a lot of other fruit on the market, but this year it is really very extreme." According to Eryvan prices were better than last year. Then the Tommies cost 3.50 to 4.50 on average and this year 2.50 to 3.50 FOT.
According to him last year the season was more active. "This year demand decreased after the Easter holidays and did not really recuperated after that. I think that the difficult demand is to be attributed to the crisis. Possibly things may improve during the coming weeks, but that is difficult to predict," Eryvan concludes.
