Ewald Gouwenberg from Waterman Onions:

Netherlands: ''Overseas departures determine onion market''

The overseas destinations determine the onion market at the moment, says salesman Ewald Gouwenberg of onion grading and packing company Waterman Onions from Emmeloord, Netherlands. "But you'll see in the light of the limited stock we had last week and this week will not be much better. Last weekend there was plenty harvested, but onions will be available at the earliest at the end of next week."

The price for a bale of onions is currently around 19/20 Euro. "For the small volume which we now have, we cannot complain about the market. Last week we sent onions to Senegal and Central America and this week we load for the Ivory Coast, Gambia and Mauritius," says Ewald.

"I envision real possibilities this season. The harvest will be a bit lower than last year. I don't see problems with quality, as long as we harvest in the coming weeks."
