Vincent Kronenburg of Zoutewelle:

"EU: "Increasing demand expected for Canadian cherries"

Zoutewelle have Canadian cherries available again this year. "We have had the cherries available for about ten days. Normally the cherries from Canada arrive in the middle of July, but because of the rain in the early areas the cherries now only came on the European market at the the end of July/the beginning of August," Vincent Kronenburg of Zoutewelle tells.

At the moment the price of Canadian cherries is between 7.50 and 10.00 Euro depending on the size, but Vincent expects the demand to increase in the coming period as the volume of the European harvest decreases. But American cherries are also still available on the market. Zoutewelle export the Canadian cherries all over Europe.

The supply of the cherries from the Canadian province of British Colombia is by air. "At the moment we are receiving the variety Lapin and these will be followed by Sweetheart and Staccato. The weather at the moment is first class for the cherry cultivation with warm days and cold nights and the quality of the cherries is first class," Vincent says. "The Canadian cherries are a real speciality, which is appreciated well by specific buyers in Barcelona and Paris."
