Argentina: “Citrus export hit by drought”

Producers of citrus fruit hope the government will declare a national emergency after crop suffered heavy losses due to drought. According to daily newspaper El Litorial however, the Ministry sees no immediate need for assistance, saying there is no question of an emergency.

The drought that afflicted the province of Tucumán during the first few months of this year, proved especially hard on its cardinal industry. The lemon crop was severely damaged, leading to anticipations of a much smaller harvest. The chairman of Asociación Tucumana de Citrus, Roberto Sánchez Loria, confirmed that “as a direct result of the drought, there will be a smaller harvest.”

“Export of citrus will likely be pushed back to September,” he went on to say, “and we will have to assume a more modest crop than last year.”
