Mexico exporting Tamaulipas lemon to the US

Citrus growers from Tamaulipas, Mexico, have so far exported close to 2,000 tonnes of Italian lemon; however, the goal is to sell over 20,000 tonnes in the North American market before the end of the year, told SAGARPA's delegate, Roberto Salinas Salinas.

This crop's harvesting cycle has come to an end, and right now producers are preparing the schedule of export shipments.

"We estimate that the sale of 20,000 tonnes of Italian lemon will generate 100 million dollars in profit for the producers, which would certainly improve their economic conditions due to the losses they suffered last year because of drought."

For now, almost 2,000 tonnes of this citrus have already been shipped to the northern neighbour's market.

"These harvests correspond to the productive cycle that finished recently in the municipalities of Güemes, Padilla, Hidalgo and Victoria."

Also, Salinas Salinas indicated that in order to promote the commercialization of Tamaulipas' agricultural production, samples of products such as tomatoes have been shipped to countries like the Netherlands and Germany, as well as honey to Japan.

"But we are also looking for new markets for products such as onions and aloe vera, among others."
