Peru: Asparagus exports up 56% over the past six years

Fresh and frozen asparagus exports grew 56% over the past six years and Peruvian sales reached US$ 293 million during 2011, informed the Foreign Trade Association of Peru (ComexPerĂș).

They highlighted that Peruvian shipments during 2012's first semester amounted to US$ 117 million; 14% more than in the same period last year.

Among the main destination countries we have the US, with Peruvian exports valued at US$ 64 million between January and June 2012; 20% more than in 2011.

The US market receives 56% of all Peruvian asparagus.

Second is the Netherlands, with US$ 23 million and a 7% growth compared to the first semester last year.

In third place is the UK, with US$ 9 million and a 6% growth.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, between January and May 2012 159 million kilos of asparagus were produced, which is 4% more than what was produced over the same period in 2011.
