Mexico: Pineapple growers ask for support to rescue crops

Pineapple growers from La Cuenca del Papaloapan, Mexico, asked the state government for support to rescue the crops affected by drought.

The representative, Ángel Cruz Benítez, President of La Cuenca's Pineapple Rural Producers Association, announced that pineapple planting this year, on an area of 425.5 hectares, has suffered up to 80% losses due to drought.

That is why they visited government for a dialogue with the State Governor, Gabino Cué, to request funds for the reactivation of the production.

He affirmed that the head of government had promised them 10 million pesos to support pineapple growers, but these funds have yet to arrive, which is why the production of the fruit in the state has come to a halt.

In total there are 126 producers from the communities of Loma Bonita, Arroyo Metate, San Benito Lencinal, Francisco Villa, El Triunfo, Agua Pescadito, Guadalupe Victoria, 10 de Abril, 20 de Noviembre and Nuevo Horizonte.
