Chile: ‘We want to be profitable in the prune business’
Diego Palacios, Business Manager of Superfruit, says Chile’s plum industry is a growing sector, and merits serious attention. “To become the world’s leading exporter of prunes (dried plums), several invested parties, like producers, handlers and distributors, have to think strategically. Of course, domestic partners and clients also have a part to play.” Palacios added that if the industry upgrades its efficiency, it generates far better results.
Many changes still have to be made though. Progress has been reached, but the endeavour is by no means easy. “Participants have to work together to reach maximal profits, and to position the brand in the world market, something that California has been doing for decades.”
When it comes to 2012, Superfruit’s expectations are high. Developing sound communication strategies is essential when exploring new market territory. “In order to be profitable, we have to take into account global variables like recession and sustainability,” stresses Diego Palacios. This year, Superfruit is poised to face challenges in the field of production, delivery and turnover in relation to sustaining quality and service.
