France, Italy, Costa Rica and Argentina main fruit providers for Spain
Spanish imports of French fruit rose in 2011 up to 180,817 tonnes, 3% more than in 2010. Imports from Italy amounted to 120,673 tonnes, 7% less than in 2010.
France and Italy are the main providers of fruit in Spain in global terms, as they are the largest apple providers, which is the main fruit purchased by Spain. After apples, the main fruits imported by Spain are bananas, pineapples and kiwis.
After the two European countries, the main fruit providers for Spain are Costa Rica, Argentina, Brazil and Ecuador. Spanish imports of fruit from Costa Rica amounted in 2011 to 110,673 tonnes. Pineapples and bananas were the main fruits imported with 67,866 and 38,789 tonnes respectively.
Spanish imports of fruit from Argentina reached 84,701 tonnes. Oranges and lemons were the main products imported with 37,077 and 31,947 tonnes respectively.
Imports from Brazil amounted to 78,895 tonnes. Melon was the main fruit imported with 41,932 tonnes.
Imports from Ecuador stood at 78,079 tonnes, from which 53,971 corresponded to bananas.
Portugal has taken number seven in the list of main fruit providers for Spain with 65,696 tonnes, and after that appear Chile and New Zealand. Imports from Chile stood at 64,378 tonnes. Apples, with 20,788 tonnes and kiwis, with 16,162 tonnes are the main fruits imported by Spain from Chile. Finally, among the fruit-providing countries it is also worth mentioning New Zealand, with 42,361 tonnes, from which 39,366 tonnes correspond to kiwis.
Spanish fruit imports in 2011 stood at 1.16 million tonnes with a value of 920 million Euro, according to data from the Department of Customs and Special Taxes from the AEAT, processed by FEPEX.
