Tunisia: no import ban on bananas, but...

M.A. Ferchichi, spokesperson for the Tunisian ministry of trade, denied last Thursday that the government wants to ban the import of bananas. He pointed out that Tunisia is bound to international agreements.

But Ferchichi did indicate that the import of bananas could possibly be lessened in 2013. This way other products that are more important than bananas, such as medicine, could be given priority. According to the Tunisian government the import of 'superfluous' products could be lessened because there is enough fruit present on the Tunisian market that is produced locally.

The spokesperson for the ministry of trade emphasised that no decision has been made yet.
