Australia celebrates Orange Week!

Australians are being encouraged to "grab an orange" and get their daily dose of Vitamin C as Citrus Australia celebrates Aussie Orange Week 2012.

Aussie Orange Week, which starts today, August 6, is a chance to celebrate Australian orange growers who are expecting one of their best crops since the drought years, meaning Aussie householders can expect navel oranges which are juicier than ever.

This year’s crop is also producing the best size and quality fruit seen for a number of years.

Citrus Australia CEO, Judith Damiani says there has never been a better time to enjoy the benefits of a delicious orange.

Not only are they extremely affordable, but oranges provide a simple and natural way for Australians to get their daily dose of Vitamin C.

"A single orange provides adults with 116% of their daily intake of Vitamin C – which is great for keeping your immune system in top shape during the cold and flu season," she said.

"Your body needs to replenish Vitamin C every day. Oranges are so reasonably priced why wouldn’t you treat yourself to the sweet juicy taste every day?"

This year around 385,000 tonnes of navel oranges are expected to be harvested and destined for domestic and export markets including Japan, Hong Kong and the USA.
The Australian citrus industry is celebrating Aussie Orange Week and the peak of the harvest by handing out succulent navels to early morning commuters in Melbourne at Flinders Street Station on Monday, August 6 and in Sydney’s Martin Place on Tuesday, August 7.

"Keep an eye out for our Aussie Orange Week ambassadors in Melbourne and Sydney who’ll be celebrating the healthy benefits of oranges by handing out free samples from their vintage bikes!" said Ms Damiani.

"We’re inviting everyone to help us celebrate over the next four to six weeks and rediscover the great taste and health benefits of Aussie citrus," Ms Damiani said.

"Aussie oranges have never tasted better, so now’s the time to enjoy the pick of the crop."

Aussie Orange week runs from Monday, August 6 to Saturday, August 11.
