US (FL): Brooks Tropicals pioneers star fruit food safety
Reaching near-perfect scores, Brooks’ food safety audits were performed by PrimusLabs for the firm’s starfruit groves, harvesting crews, packinghouse and storage facility.
"Food safety is priority one at Brooks Tropicals," said Greg Smith, CEO. "It’s more than excelling at audits; it’s about building a culture where every employee acts as a food safety inspector and is proud to perform the duty."
"We’re proud of the results which reflects our company-wide efforts in this arena," said Peter Leifermann, director of sales and fruit procurement.
These starfruit audits and their superior scores add to Brooks Tropicals’ roster of other food safety audits for their SlimCado avocado and Caribbean Red papaya fields, harvesting crews, packinghouses and storage facilities.
Brooks Tropicals has grown starfruit or carambola for just over fifty years on the west coast of Florida on Pine Island. The fruit is grown under screening to mimic the dense canopy of trees it grows under in its native soils of Asia. Florida starfruit is typically sweeter than Asian varieties.
