Greenstar apple braced for struggle against GM competitor

The new GM apple that is being developed for 2014 release from the Okanagan Specialty Fruits company, in British Columbia, could provide a challenge for Greenstar.

The Arctic apples, as the GM non browning varieties are called, are awaiting approval for release in the US and Canada.

The Greenstar apple currently fuilfils the same role, without recourse to genetic modification.

Urs Luder, Director of Greenstar Kanzi Europe, isn’t worried that the GM variety will overshadow the Greenstar on arrival: "The Greenstar contains a surplus of vitamin C, causing the apple to stay white on its own accord. Its refreshing taste and the natural way in which it is produced, will always beat a product that is achieved artificially."
