France: Chicory season 2011/2012 finishes with high prices
In France the chicory season 2011/2012 finished with high prices, as mentioned by the German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI) on its website. Seen in total the 2011/2012 season was one of the better ones, although at the start of the season there were a few problems and periods with low prices.
In the 2011/2012 season chicory was grown on an area of 10,728 HA in France. With this the cultivation area, other than in previous years, did not decrease further. Despite the unchanged cultivation area the harvest in 2011 was about 14% less chicory than in the previous year, namely 303,800 tons.
After that in the beginning of the season clearly larger quantities were harvested than in the previous year, the production in the following months was smaller. The smaller production quantities, however, had a positive effect on the price, especially during the last two months of the season. In addition the not so summery weather conditions in April and May kept the demand at a high level.
