Fairtrade turnover increased by 12% worldwide
Austria - Fairtrade products achieved a trading turnover of about five billion Euro (+12%) in 2011 compared to 2010. In Austria this is about 100 million Euro, as estimated by Fairtrade Austria - an increase of 15% compared to 2010. The turnovers were calculated on the basis of traded quantities.
In Austria 12,600 tons of fairtrade bananas were sold (turnover 25.1 million Euro turnover), 1,488 tons of fairtrade coffee (18.7 million Euro turnover) and 567 tons of fairtrade chocolate (18.2 million Euro turnover). Already every fifth banana sold in the country is sold under the Fairtrade hallmark. In Switzerland this is 55% of all bananas sold.
According to Fairtrade more than 1.2 million small agrarians and wage dependent workers from in the meantime 66 countries profit from the honest prices. People all getting more and more aware of honest and durable consumption, as understood by Fairtrade from the turnover development.
