Hans de Meyer, Mechelse Veilingen:
"Flandria-aubergines important export product"
The Mechelse Veilingen is an important sales auction house for aubergines in Belgium. "Last year almost 12.5 million kg. was supplied. The area remains about the same the last few years and is about 20 HA." Hans de Meyer, Supervisor Marketing at Mechelse Veilingen says. As for all Flandria products the production of aubergines is controlled by a large number of do's and dont's, which are strictly followed by the grower. An extern independent control guarantees, that Flandria aubergines satisfy the high quality and environment requirements.
Sorting is done on the basis of weight, from a minimum of 100 gr.to more than
500 gr. each. The main sorting (+225 gr.) is standard, both in EPS-T 3 kg. crate as in aubergine boxes of 5 kg. "Since June we offer a new packing EPS-P 5 kg.crate" Hans de Meyer adds. The other sortings are sold in aubergine boxes.
Now also e-commerce
This southern fruit vegetable has quite some trump cards for the trade. The continuous supply of a homogenous product during a long period is being guaranteed. Retail dealers and sellers of fresh products can be sure of top quality from Flandria and of a reliable supply. "Aubergines are the second product at Mechelse Veilingen, which is being offered via e-commerce in addition to the clock. Our buyers can now in addition to cucumbers mediate aubergines also for delivery next week at a fixed price in the by them required packing and supply at a pre-determined day" Hans de Meyer explains.
Close by and far away sales markets
"Flandria-aubergines are a very important export product" Hans de Meyer declares. "A large market is Russia, but also the Scandinavian countries are good clients of the sizes 225, 300 and 400 gr. Of the smaller sizes (110 and 175 gr.) a large quantitiy is exported to the U.S. and Canada. Flandria aubergines are also selling well in our neighbouring countries Germany, France, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom." The season of aubergines still runs to November, with July and August as absolute top months. In weeks 31 to 35 the LAVA-auction houses expect a weekly supply of 250,000 kg.
