difference of 50% of dose results in small difference in production
Tomatoes growing well with limited CO2 dose
It is expected that the quantity CO2 will decrease in the future, because of the decrease in availability from natural gas and the social interest in decreasing the CO2 emission. Therefore research has been done to establish the results of a decrease in dosing quantity in the development and production of tomatoes. The research is financed by the "Productschap Tuinbouw" and the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation in the framework of the program Kas as energy source.
With a limited dose of CO2 cultivation is quite possible. A difference of 50% in dose (46,2 to 23,2 kg (m2 annual) resulted in a small difference in production of
1 kg/m2 (65,7 to 64,7). The saving in CO2 is mainly the result of less loss by ventilation by opened air windows. The leaf texture differed as a result of both dose strategies. In the photo synthesis capacity there was no difference in the two CO2 dose strategies.
In order to decrease the use of CO2 so much must be dosed as is required for plant in-take and a small loss through ventilation. Another result of this research is that 'Komeett' in growing period clearly reacts differently to temperature than 'Cappricia'. A low twenty-four hour temperature increases the growing period of 'Komeett considerable.
