Summer fruit in import centre Brussels

On Tuesday 17 July I visited the importers in the European Centre in Brussels. It was striking how quiet it was this day and there were hardly any customers. According to the importers this was mainly the result of the holiday period and the dark weather. Part of the traders went home a little early because of this.

Despite the weather and the fact that the number of visitors was disappointing many fruit and vegetable traders showed their product with passion. There is plenty of summer fruit again, such as melons and top fruit from Spain and France. Also the Italian grape season is in full swing and from various parts of the world the exotics and citrus arrive.

The European Centre for fruit and vegetables is an import centre established in the heart of Europe, Brussels. 75% of the products traded here come from Europe and 25% from various other countries. The most important European countries are Spain, Italy and France. The market starts early, from 4 am. traders start displaying their products and at 6 o'clock most buyers are present. From an area of 250 km around Brussels clients come to the European Centre.
