Costa Rica: Pest harms pineapple sector
The outbreak, sweeping through the north of the Central American country, is contributed to 12 large pineapple producing companies that have illegally dumped their waste. Although the ban is in operation until September, a new plaque is almost unavoidable, as over 300 hectare was already found to be infected by larvae, according to the government’s fytosanitary service.
Radio Santa Clara added that health authorities have laid claim to the ban in order to prevent further spread. According to the radio station, the flies also have an enormous impact on the cattle-breeding industry, as well as on 15 neighbouring regions of Cutris de San Carlos.
