Ecuador: Snail plagues affecting pineapple producers and exporters
In Ecuador, some pineapple exporters have been having trouble making international shipments of the fruit due to snail plagues. Snails are a winter pest, and because we are in a winter-summer transition period, the spread of the plague is latent.
In any case, with prevention measures before harvesting the plague and the damages it brings can be prevented. A producer and exporter said that "during the pre-harvesting process (approximately 4 weeks before harvesting) it is necessary to fumigate to stop the spread of pests such as snails. With the right chemicals, pests can be eliminated and only firms not using the appropriate treatments are affected."
Exports from some Ecuadorian pineapple producers have been problematic, because on arrival to their destinations snails have been detected. It is worth mentioning that not all Ecuadorian pineapple producers are suffering from this.
