"Jan Dortmans (Scherpenhuizen): "Disappointing demand"

Cucumber market anxiously awaits sunny weather

"The weather is the salesman" is a cliche, which on the cucumber market is far too often true. "There is a reasonable supply of cucumbers, but a disappointing demand as a result of the weather conditions." Jan Dortmans of the firm Scherpenhuizen says. "We anxiously wait for sunny weather. Products will indeed go up, but I am convinced that the demand will then come before the products."

"Many small sizes (30/35) have been supplied recently, whilst this was not planned this way. This has caused pressure on the market and large differences between assortments" Dortmans says. At the moment the price of the 40 assortment is about 20 cents. "People who know the weather have promised better weather, therefore we have to live with this hope now for a while. When the temperature increases that is in any case favourable for the consumption of cucumbers."
